After the events of Blood Moon, Simon is forced to face the dangerous depths of his powers. Last time he saved his Covenant by killing their enemies, but as his strength grows, it becomes clear that he poses a threat to his friends too. His struggle to control and accept his magic begins to interfere with his training to become a True Witch, and with his relationships with the Covenant and even his soul mate, Willa. The light witches’ victory against Archard's dark coven was only temporary, and as he again gathers his forces against Willa and Simon's light Covenant, Simon's magic may be the only thing strong enough to save them.
The Downside:
If that summary sounds like the series has changed protagonists, well, don't let the large POV sections still devoted to Willa fool you, she has very little to do this time around other than worry about Simon and act as motivation for his increasingly fickle angst. The size of the Covenant also continues to make it difficult to attach to many individual characters.
The Upside:
...is incredibly difficult to describe, because you simply have to stick around for the twist. All that fickle angst is leading to a great big payoff. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy fresh glimpses of Twelve Acres’ mysterious magical history, our soul mate couple’s first true relationship challenges, the refreshingly normal parents of our New Adult heroine, and a return to The Moonlight Trilogy’s distinct, immersive contemporary fantasy atmosphere, sprinkled with dark flecks of surprising bite.
